"To love, be loved - Between the loss of self and self-discovery"
A philosophical essay

This essay approaches the opportunities and threats that is faced by the self, that loves. It highlights the nature of love and connection through which positions the object of love and the loved ones can be even conceived. These studies are exemplary of various philosophers called to the scene here in particular it should be investigated: Does loving and being loved for the subject at the end of losing oneself in order to gain different? Or are we actually self-discovery to do the experiences of autonomy or the lover of her love in the object of love?

The dynamics behind the love

subject of this essay is not directly the question of what will really love . We use the response for the purpose of the study implies for granted. If one considers, for example, the myth, Plato the Aristophanes sets in the Symposium in his mouth - after the man once divine double beings were that separated the Olympus because of their abundance of power, so that the from now on individual, separate people, only the invisible bond to their counterparts remained, a striving for perfection, a former divinity - we see this in love a path to transcendence . It is the search for a higher, more desirable state in this world, which also carries connotations of divine. The myth accentuates the parting of creation as an independent being, the transfer in the encounter their own lives to a higher level of being. The meeting will
development, the development component includes the myth of self-realization and self-extension . Thus, the causal dynamics of love is so far recorded. But how is one to even with the urge? What must necessarily mean to love for a loving subject? Are there wrong ways, which can enter the lovers or the end, if it loves or love to believe?
The philosopher and psychologist, Simone de Beauvoir was dedicated to her work "The Second Sex," including the theme of love, and while they last by a maxim that a plausible understanding of love as an expression of a striving for transcendence of self implies, it shows also misunderstandings that threaten to love and be loved. Although Beauvoir's work in particular in the context of its production time to present their observations are universal. Here they are called in exemplary fashion to the first to approach the phenomenon of self loss in love .

loss of self and selflessness - to perform or Error?

Beauvoir After losing people - especially women - are in love objects, who love her passionately, but even forgotten. The love here is a spare existence, in whose favor the autonomy of the lovers being abandoned in the hope that the lovers could achieve on this journey of transcendence. Beauvoir sums up her observations in the intermediate result:
"Love is aimed at forgetting its essential self in favor of a subject."
Would it be justified to say that it has found the love of their fulfillment? Without a doubt loves this way the self in the other with the goal of transcendence. But the paradox of the statement is obvious. The self wants to give up completely, to increase. Self-negation wants to obtain self-affirmation.
Ironically, appears an extreme form of self-abandonment to present an illusion of what we have called transcendence. Instead, find an unconscious projection of his own constituents rather than being in a beloved object. They endanger the fulfillment of love in two ways: First, the love object, can be overwhelming in this context, a man in the face of the projection and deification, which it learns. It cuts the bond, he loses or projected in the literal sense of the life. Second, our selflessness appears in the projects as in love disguised narcissism that celebrates in its own participation in the other, as a divine promise of salvation and its perceived their own glory. Here, the last ones is entirely under the sign of being loved, the rejection of one's self and his loss make a detour back to simple self-love. An encounter with the Other and development has taken place with it.
loss of self is thus a plausible way out of the love that pursued but not least the specified performance. The phenomenon of projection and the special form of submission which Beauvoir describes is symptomatic of a lack of self-consciousness. The concept of loving self-sacrifice will fail because the encounter in love is not equivalent, but denied a part, suppressed and extinguished must be to achieve transcendence. Who is the myth of Aristophanes calls to mind will find that people will stay despite their desire for love, but separately. Their brazen unit is purely symbolic. Degree of autonomy is therefore necessarily. As a consequence, that is, for the love that she can not replace but complement needs.
an example, can be called Erich Fromm, who devotes his essay "Art of Loving," a chapter on the subject of self-love, and it deals with the essence of selflessness in love. He notes that the selflessness of Love, a lack of self-love implies, the selfless lover "at all in his ability to love, or to rejoice, [is] paralyzed, that he is full of enmity against life and that behind the facade of his selflessness is a subtle, but that does not hide less intensive self-centeredness. "

loss of self occurs when the organization is misunderstood in love as a substitution of the self by the self of another. Where the return is missing on one's own being, Everything comes to a meeting only last illusion and self-sacrifice in the other, even though there should be a self-fulfilling in the other. The subject finds fulfillment only in love, if it finds itself in the other, that implies that the self can still refer to themselves. Self meeting will take place not when self-sacrifice forces the subject to disappear in the object of his love. It can not grow, it annihilates itself: it does not love the others for what he gives it, but for what it represents itself as part of the Other.
It is incapable of love.

The autonomy of the lovers

In what kind of attitude now a self-fulfillment in love? Obviously it has to be aware of his.
In each step shown here schematically, as Erich Fromm in The Art of Loving " outlines the relationship between self-love and love for other people:
(1) "Love is in principle indivisible, one can not separate the love of others'Objekten Love 'by the love of one's self."
(2) ability to love is to love themselves so as others and vice versa.
(3) the absence of a part, the subject of self-love or love to other people, so it is not capable of love. (This follows from 2)
(4) love another, a "concentration of the capacity for love and the affirmation of those properties that belong to the essence of man.
(5) A person (or his essence) love means to love all people.
(6) own Even so must be an object's own love. (This follows from 4 and 5)
love can not work, therefore, when the loving subject is not even aware of its separateness from the love object, and not equally recognizes the autonomy of the self. The end does not necessarily selfish. Beauvoir notes, like when at the end of their reflections on love notes:
"The authentic love should be based on mutual recognition of two freedoms, each of the two lovers would then experience as himself and as the other. None were on its denial of transcendence, maim no security. Both were together in the world values and goals . See By their mutual gift would be the one as the other, the love of a revelation of themselves and to an enrichment of the Universe "
Finally, we look again to Aristophanes' myth to record our results, the self -.. The God of his twins separated man -. is reflected by the addition of the gods to themselves what it is, is the invisible and the driving band on the other hand, can complete the it a misunderstanding of love over narcissism ends in loss of self and non-performance of what the love. it promises: ending self in the illusion of what is to be transcendent
contrast. is self-consciousness and - love and recognition of their autonomy in the love that which leads back to separate people by loving encounter in their old unit: by complementation, not by substitution of the self.
